Sitting By A River

I sat down
near a river
to collect my thoughts.

They have been wandering most of the day.

I think that it was raining,
though the drops of water

only seemed to be falling from my eyes.

I watched the clear blue water.
Threw a stone and caused a ripple;

just as if I threw a stone into my life.

I lay back on the grass.
Looked up into the leaves of the trees.

Tried to count the veins inside each leaf.
It was impossible.

And so was any hope of retaining sanity.

I heard the sound of birds.
Splashing of fish in the water.

Sounds of nature casually happening
all around the spot where I was.

Maybe I would stay here forever?
Maybe I would walk into the water
until it covered my body
and
rushed into my ears.

This would block out the sound
of my tears dripping onto the ground.

I realized that the water represented me.
It flowed, or was still,
depending on the wind.
It was clear, or muddy,
depending on the day.

I will never have this moment again.
By the time I write its meaning down
it will have gone away.

I will still be sitting here
watching the time flow
saying goodbye to
everything I loved.
