"Bang Bang" She Sang

"Bang Bang" she sang and the visions of
the time of Sonny and Cher became
so instantly real. Ah, we were such
different people than! Such mixed
suggestions of right and wrong
perspectives. I sang a Beatles song
back at her, its plaintive vowels
caressing her happiness. I cannot
stop the nostalgia escaping
from my heart. So I flow my soul
back to those times, when record players
could still be state of the art. When
black and white television sets still
showed images of moral conformity and
suit and tie illusions. I remember
watching the news back then, wondering
if the Americans would ever get out of
Vietnam? Would they never stop
their terrorism? The crowds of long-haired
hippies demanded that they do so.
The latest rage from England smashed
into North American consciousness.
Lennon said they were bigger than God,
and I suspect he wasn't wrong. I recall
studying every word of every song that
seemed to be so relevant for us all.
We gave peace a chance in our souls,
but could not convince the rest of the
world to agree. "Bang Bang" she sang and
I realized her eyes were crying.
