Piper’s Bill

Don’t even contemplate

Telling me you love me now.

Don’t even think of it

I will forget you somehow.

I am just mis’rable

Pacing back and forth this way.

I am about worn out

And yet its only midday.

You used to protect me

At least that is what you said.

Who protects me from you

And our special trysts in bed?

I cannot swim upstream

Against a raging current.

I can’t reverse the flow

And you can, I’ll warrant.

Yet I do know one thing,

Oh hurtful man who was mine.

You will never again

Feel yourself and me entwine.

I can resist you now.

It’s a struggle I can win.

It’s not impossible

I can mask the pain within.

Just don’t you ever try

To tell me that you love me.

I know the odds are that

This love was never to be.

So it cannot exist.

It never has, never will.

Time to pay the piper

I’ll be sending you the bill.
