K-Gear: in the Summer, July, of nineteen
seventy-six, I saw you---shirtless, barefoot,
clad in straight-leg jeans before that style returned
to common fashion. Varsity football star
in high school, you did
not heed the prejudice of haters and prudes;
you did not condemn my God-given nature,
treating me as a friend. Later, at college---
my first term there---I fantasized about you
both clothed and naked:
always shoeless, feet bare or sock-sheathed; your hair
a shag cut, parted in the middle; and your
shirtless, muscular torso, hirsute with your
nipples prominent, erect at my gaze---like
that bright July day.
