The rose was naked when you offered it to
him. Then, shoeless and shirtless, clad in baggy
jeans and fragrant dark socks, you offered yourself
to him---both gifts received with grateful, urgent
enthusiasm.

Author's Notes/Comments:
Inspired by memories of a couple, boyfriends, during my years in junior high school, 1970-1973. Following the example of Constantine Cavafy's poetry, I seek to preserve the memory of their relationship in verse, which gives it a better resilience than mere human memory.
