Author's Notes/Comments:
In those days, certain couples' love was considered both perverse and defiant of societal expectations and even, in some rather backward locations, enacted laws by clodhopping state legislatures. The couple described in the poem loved each other despite societal disapproval, and when their team found out, its members helped to protect them from prejudiced thugs (primarily off-campus) and other interferences. Some locals considered Jacques, a Swiss national, to be an unwelcome foreigner: but he was a good student, a varsity starter even as a freshman, a high-scorer in his game, and utterly beautiful in appearance.
