+ 3RD POEMS: To Matthew Shepard, For The Twenty-Fifth Anniversary, Murder Became Martyrdom

Matthew, the twenty-fifth anniversary of one of our

great and lingering American shames approaches.

And many will ignore it---this is an effect of the desecration

the innately evil forces have inflicted upon this nation.

But God can place martyrdom's crown upon heinous murders,

so that not even the worst insurrectionists' fantasy

can dismiss those crimes as the "fake news" of conspiracy.

Insurrection and thuggery---what is the difference?

Not much when one looks at the experience

and the heinous effect

of those who are the most suspect,

and most convicted.

October twelfth and July seventeenth,

nineteen ninety-eight and nineteen eighteen

(eighty years, three months, and an odd number of days):

and two great nations carelessly, arrogantly, prostituted

the once fine morality with which they had been constituted.

Insurrectionists and thugs .  . .

morally lower than the slime left by slugs.

But you, Matthew, have joined that great cloud of witnesses.

When you entered Heaven, did they give you a meet and greet;

and Alexei, hurrying toward you on eagerly bare feet?
