I loved doing research in the college's
library, striding among the tall stacks of
full bookshelves---the floor cool beneath my soles, my
eagerly bare feet partly concealed by my
baggy jeans' frayed cuffs:
free, here on campus, from stern parental rules,
like "All shoes on deck!", which they enforced with their
usual, almost totalitarian
efficiency; but, on campus floors and grounds---
beyond their demands.
