So much has changed in our town's landscape; yet, where
Verging Creek is narrowest and shallowest,
that large flat rock remains submerged in just two
or so inches of water; the rock's surface
full of small fossils
defiant of time;
and on that rock, BlueShift---shoeless and shirtless---
stood, soaking in fresh creekwater the tattered
bell-bottom cuffs of his jeans and, beneath them,
his dark blue socks . . . because I asked him to do so.
