Everything They Wanted

The clock ticks louder than it did before,

Picking up pace till it breaks off the wall.

I once squarely faced it, ready for war,

But today its wisdom cushions the fall.

I’d learned to fool myself, or so I thought –

A more futile effort was never wrought.

The bitterest truths leave none of us spared.

After time robs us they’re all we can trust.

For now fortune smiles, but I’ll be prepared

When everything they wanted turns to dust.

You must remind me I’m not to complain

When I walk into rooms and no heads turn.

If I’m still not callused against the pain

My only choice will be to let it burn.

Without their adoration who am I?

Will I know before this all passes by?

The bitterest truths leave none of us spared.

After time robs us they coat us with rust.

For now fortune smiles, but I’ll be prepared

When everything they wanted turns to dust.
