Storm Before the Calm

I know it’s hard to keep your conviction,

To greet the world with a smile that’s true.

It smarts to learn the fact from the fiction

When the sharp end of wisdom befalls you.

All at once feels dismal and desolate,

Dark clouds trespassing on all you hold dear,

But consider that the moment you quit

You’ll begin a new life controlled by fear.

I too have felt it, the darkness that gnaws,

The thunderstorm within this grand design -

I came to value it for all its flaws

And lived again to see that great sun shine.

It was just about then I conceded

A storm before the calm had been needed.
