He Wasn't You

He went out of his way for me,
Straining himself to be my ideal man.
Soon the truth became plain to see –
He’d been acting as soon as we began.

He wasn’t you.

He talked of our future life together,
All the requisite points of house and home.
His grip was firm, then changed like the weather –
He dropped me by the roadside, free to roam.

He wasn’t you.

He had in a PhD in sex and love,
Knew how to stoke my every desire.
In spite of no apparent lack thereof
I shuddered to learn there was no fire.

He wasn’t you.

He behaved like a total gentleman,
Without a doubt earned my utmost respect.
Still, when the truth settled above the din
It confirmed what I’d long come to suspect…

He wasn’t you.
