Alcohol and Me

Whether it came before me or after

Hardly makes a difference, hardly matters

Against the twisted thoughts, the chilling laughter

That damage our love, leave it in tatters.

I can't speak one word you can't misconstrue.

All my kindnesses become forsaken.

You said "I'll be there, I'll always be true,"

Then suddenly your presence was taken.

We planned evenings. Then I looked in your eyes

And saw I had need for new arrangements.

Your words...stunningly cruel. I now realize

Ours is the stuff of prolonged estrangements.

I excuse myself, I see quite clearly -

There's alcohol, there's me. It won't be me.
