That Was Me

You tell me no bright future lies in wait,
That life has passed you by, that it's too late.
You know by now all the world has to teach.
Contentment, you're certain, is out of reach.

Take a look in the mirror - look, and see.
Well, that was me, my child. That was me.

Practice patience and find what you're made of.
At last you will feel that important love
Which keeps discouraging voices at bay
And allows you to dismiss what they say.

Soon your real life will come. Wait and see.
Look in the mirror, love. That was me.
