Bated Breath (part IV)

Folder:
A Fallen Hero

Deep in the shadows and up from the night
A new demon rises to harvest the light
With promise he swoons to an angel’s delight
But little she knows when she gazes into his eyes
He will be the one to devise her demise
Unbeknownst to an angel in flight
This demon chides in the mask used to hide
To truth of the heart he’ll split in twine

“My dearest,” he whispers to make her heart melt
“With you I can find the heart within myself”

She giggles as a smile crosses her lips
She leans on the demon and steals a quick kiss

“My hero,” she calls him, not knowing his guise
“You are the reason, I’m back in the light”

“Then allow me, my dearest, to keep you alive
May forever grace you with your new sense of pride”

“Oh, how you always speak to the heart inside me
If you did not come, I know not where I’d be
Thank you, my savior, for simply being
With you here I know I can do anything”

Upon a cloud rests a warrior’s soul
Undying in the midst of his paradise shown
When echoes a murmurs rise up from below
And his angel sees his brow sinking low
From a world filled with pain, this hero built hope
To save from the misery, all the lost souls
A brother in arms as the wars razed his home
Here now he waits for the call of lost hope

“Silly knight,” my angel reminds
“Always seeking a new cause to fight
Why is it, I wonder, can’t you be satisfied
By living here with me in our paradise”

“My lady,” I assure her, “I’m perfectly fine
With you, my angel, I’m always satisfied
But I cannot dawdle, when lost souls are crying
After all, it’s the reason, I gave you my life”

“This I know, and I always have, my dear
But for some reason, I’m starting to feel
That the longer you linger, the more you will fear
That this heaven we’ve built can’t be real”

“As real as anything, and everything I’ve known
You are the salvation of my undying soul
You are my reason, and you are my hope
And this is the reason, I’m sure you must know
When a soul is tortured, it’s my job to show
That soul will not be left to fend on its own
My dearest, you understand, I can’t leave them alone”

Up in the ether, the hero stands firm
Listening for anything he can learn
For the demons will always make their return
And it is his duty to make sure they burn

Down below, in the tangible realm
The demon who hides his own true self
Ensnares the angel, her soul he has felt
Awaiting the moment, he can leave her bereft

Unknowing the woman, who dances on love
Follows the demon with every touch
In her heart, he’s the one who keeps her up
But even her last for this beast won’t be enough

“You’re watching intently,” the angel interrupts
“Which is the demon? Which will be undone?”

“He is the demon, and she does not know
But until she realizes he’s stealing her hope
I must watch over waiting for my chance to go
Because I cannot save her while his lies are unknown
Until she cries for me, she’s all on her own”

“But my dearest, she will not cry, don’t you see
Until he has shaken the earth from her knees
Why must you torture yourself while he feeds
Waiting for the moment when she starts to scream?”

“Because, I must be ready when the call reaches me
Soon it will come, in my heart I believe
This act he transpires, he’s not able to keep
Before he’s too tired to haze what she sees”

The angel coaxes her hero from the edge

“Why not wait with me,” she says
“You will save her, there’s no doubt in this
There’s no need to wait with bated breath
Enjoy what time you have while you can
When she screams, I know, you’ll be ready for it”

Down below the ether, on tangible ground
The demon plots while the time’s running out
He waits for the moment to bring her soul down
Into his hell, and her scream will resound

“My dearest, there is something that I must confess”
He pulls off the mask and shows her his true self
”You are now mine, I own all you have left”

As the shadows fall and the flames start to rise
The girl’s heart’s diminished in the wake of the lies

“Someone help me,” her fragile voice cries

“No one can save you, that you must believe”
With his first touch of torture, she lets out a scream...
