Work in Progress

It was dark, late and they were tired. The girl and her grandmother found themselves in the middle of the Gibraltar boarder not knowing what to do next.

It all started when they were forced into this trip. They had never gotten along well in the past so they were both wondering why Linda’s son had chosen her to make the trip with the girl. The plan was simple, take a plane to Madrid, wait for six hours and then take a second plane to Malaga where they would get in a van and go to the Rendezvous point in the English side of Gibraltar. The girl took over since the beginning, she started making decisions and taking charge she even asked for a wheelchair for Linda so she wouldn't have to walk long distances.

The trip was awkward and slow. Neither the girl nor Linda wanted to be on this trip, so they kept conversation to a minimum and when they did talk it was for a short time and only small talk or when Linda wanted to contradict the girl.

Linda got away with everything so as they were making their way to the plane, the girl carrying her own carry-on plus Lindas four bags she started to get mad, all those bags filled with god knows what and she was carrying them all.

Once in the plane she let Linda take a seat first, she then put the bags on the overhead compartments and sat dow to rest on her seat. She suddenly felt Linda’s gaze, as the girl turned her head she saw her grandmother looking at her with a look she knew all to well. Lind was about to ask her for something. As both of them sat there making eye contact, Linda suddenly said “Sweetheart, would you mind changing seats with me?” the girl started to go red, she couldn't believe this and even though the answer was yes she asked “Why? Grandma we are both on aisle seats” Linda didn't answer she just sat there as the girl mumbled “Fine.”

When they arrived at Madrid they knew it was a six hour wait so they asked around for restaurants. They said there was a Tapas restaurant and a McDonalds near the gate. The girl said “Well we have six hours lets go to the tapas place so we can loose time”. As they where making their way to the restaurant Linda looks over to the girl and says “I want McDonalds, why Tapas?” The girl simply added “Well McDonalds takes five minutes and the Tapas place takes longer... we have

six hours” Linda made her statement “I don't care about the time nor food, I want McDonalds and that is that”. The girl was in no mood for fighting so she agreed to go to McDonalds. You can imagine how the next six hours went by.

Linda and the girl boarded their next plane and before the girl sat dow she turned to Linda and asked “Would you like my sit or yours?” and of course Linda said “Yours, thank you.”

When the plane landed, they looked for a van to take them to the rendezvous point. The girl called her parents to let them know they were on the way. The girl’s parents tried to explain something but the girl didn't want to hear it, they asked to speak to Linda but the girl was to proud and wouldn't pass the phone, instead she hung up. And off they went.

As the van arrived at the Gibraltar boarder line, the driver pulled to the side and said “This is where I leave you”. The girl jumped out of her seat and said “What? You are supposed to leave us on the other side near the pier”. The driver then explained what the girl’s parents had tried to explain... The car can’t pass the boarder because it doesn't have the correct license plates.

At this point they had to walk across the boarder with all the bags. Linda was frustrated and the girl was proud and wouldn't accept the mistake. They found themselves on the other side of the boarder as they exchanged looks they knew they would have to work together.
