PONTS ARQUÉS
(voices of arkayye, arquious, rkay, arqios)
arkayye
stone curve
over water’s
slow breath
a shadow
folds itself
into the current
arquious
Here, the arches rise like the spines of leviathans
long since moored in the river’s memory,
each stone a syllable in the cathedral‑length sentence
the masons began and the centuries continue,
their mortar the dust of seasons ground fine
by the patient pestle of rain.
rkay
I walk the span at dusk —
lights in the windows
flicker on like small rehearsals for stars.
Below, a barge slides under the middle arch,
its wake folding the bridge’s reflection
into a trembling oval.
arqios
O keeper of crossings,
you bind the living bank to the bank of the gone.
Your arc is the covenant of stone and sky,
your shadow the script of the river’s vow.
All who pass are written into your curve,
and all who leave are carried in your echo.
