Deer Heart

Driving along a stretch of highway today and I saw the body of a crumpled

deer mashed up against the guardrail in perfect form.

The kinds of things you'd expect to see just weren't there.

It was sleek, free of blood and entrails.

You want to talk about panic?

The rushing by of traffic.

A wall in the way, between you and living.

The clip clopping of final steps, hurried and interrupted.

Hot highway as is, packed with assholes, gravel and your deadly mistake.
