Guardian

Heart Songs

Dark spectral mists engulf me, drenching my skin.

As I succumb to slumber, the journey begins.

I find myself lost in a swampy forest deep

Within the unconscious black realm of sleep,

Silken threads from an unseen spider’s web

Hinder my movements, my every step.

Surrounding me, trees, grotesquely deformed

Seem to inch ever closer with intent to do harm.

Shivering from the cold and dampness of the air,

Ghostly fingers of wind entangling my hair,

Eerie whispers of voices, evil cackles of glee,

Give chase, just behind me, as I stumble and flee.

Tears of fear flood my eyes, blurring my vision.

A Great Hooded Owl sounds its hoot of derision,

Mockingly enjoying my terror-filled plight,

As my screams echo soundlessly into the night.

Ahead, through the darkness, a pinpoint of light

Beams vaguely in the distance, just within sight.

In the midst of my panic, somehow I know

That toward this light is the direction to go.

I gain ground as fright lends wings to my feet.

The thunder in my ears is my every heartbeat.

As my focus trains solely on the glimmer of light,

It seems to move nearer and grows ever bright.

Malevolent vines snake across the marshy ground,

Grabbing hold of my ankles and dragging me down.

As I raise my head up, much to my surprise,

The light that I sought grows immensely in size.

In amazement, I watch as the light takes on the form

Of a man cloaked in robes with eyes like a storm.

While my mind reels in shock and I struggle to stand,

He gently bends down and reaches out his hand.

His arm feels like steel as it encircles my waist.

Love shines in his eyes as I look into his face.

As he raises the magical staff in his hand,

The nightmare then ends as quickly as it began.

A feeling of tranquility puts all terror to rest,

And trustingly, I lay my weary head on his chest.

He soothingly whispers, “There is no need to fear."

"Whenever you need me, I will always be here.”

Tender fingers close my eyes, lulling me gently to sleep,

Still held in his arms, where my safety he’ll keep.

And I know without doubt I can come to no harm

While secure in the haven of his loving arms.

In the morning, I’ll arise and treasure the night

And how my beloved guardian held me so tight.

His promise to me is a jewel I’ll keep

Under my pillow each night when I lay down to sleep.
