What I've Learned

They say that everyone messes up sometimes
Well my time just happened
“Arrested at work?
Man what a shame”
People standing and laughing
Making jokes about me
Always asking me questions
“Did you get deported?
How long did you go to jail for?”
Truth is, I got off easy
I never went to jail
But only because I have money

What kind of a society do we live in?
Where two people commit the same crime
But only one gets arrested?
Which one? You guessed it
The poor one.

I tried to explain
“Look officer, I’m really a good kid, I just screwed up
I’m an AP student, I have a job, I’ve been accepted to prestigious universities
If I get this felony, all of that is gone”

He didn’t listen
He said “don’t do the crime, if you can’t do the time.”

But in the end, I didn’t do the time
I spent a lot of money
My parents did too
And because of that money
I live today consequence free
You know what I learned from it all?

If you commit a crime, as long as you have money, it will be ok.

So all you rich people go ahead and break laws
Drive drunk, do drugs, get in fights, hell, go kill someone.
Because in the end, you’ll be fine

But if you’re poor, you better watch out
Always wear your seatbelt, and don’t even speed
Because the police are looking for you
Waiting to exploit you
Take advantage of you
And take the little bit of money you do have.

What kind of a society do we live in?

Where your net worth determines your innocence
And your paycheck decides whether or not you’re a good person
The price of your car is more important than anything else

Two people got arrested yesterday
But only one went to jail

Two people got arrested yesterday
And it made me see the flaws in society
The truth
That society doesn’t care about you, only your money

Yesterday two people got arrested
But only one went to jail

Author's Notes/Comments:

I love writing, but this is my first actual Poem. I've written them for school, but mostly half-heartedly. I don't expect this to be perfect, but i was hoping to start writing poetry more often, and was wondering what i could do to perfect it.
