Winter's Ice

Winter’s harsh and unrelenting claw
Has grasped this tree again,
Freezing the flow of life within
And biting deep within its heart.
A year of such might not decide
Whether this tree will live or die,
But the years have not been kind of late
And the strength has left the limbs.
Listen close, you’ll hear the crack
Of ice hardening to stone.
The heart cannot for long survive
And soon this tree must fall.
The spring will come as it always does,
But no more shade this tree will cast.
Its leaves cannot shoot forth again.
Its husk will slowly rot away.
This winter ice will take its toll.
