It Wasn't Long Ago

It wasn’t long ago, it seems,
That you were living in my dreams--
Thoughts of joy to come and save
This sinner from his early grave.

It wasn’t long ago, it’s true,
That your visage to this world was new.
Your infant eyes so pure of light
Could set stoic angels into flight.

It wasn’t long ago, my dear,
I protected you from every fear.
You came to me when nightmares raged.
Against those dreams a war we waged.

It wasn’t long ago, I say,
I read to you both night and day,
Sharing love of prose and verse,
‘Scaping ennui’s evil curse.

It wasn’t long ago, I know,
When off to school you had to go.
Discovering, learning, making friends,
Ensconced within your daily trends.

It wasn’t long ago, my heart,
When mother and father chose to part—
Heart torn in two but loved by both;
Your first calamity in troth.

It wasn’t long ago, my girl,
I saw your sanity unfurl.
Your mind goes to places never known,
Sitting you on your royal throne.

It won’t be long from now, I guess,
You’ll need your father’s guidance less.
You’ll know the path you wish to walk
And when it is you wish to talk
About the woes that haunt your life
And taint your days with undo strife.
I’ll be there when you come back home
And help you write your own grand tome.
