Free Among Angels

Karyn Indursky

Before an opal mirror
sits a woman staring
absent-mindedly as she
pins mole black hair up
in a perfect bun
while she beautifies herself
with various cosmetic expertly
to hide emotions behind
Montana eyes speckled with
bitter lies spinning around her
tangled web of hearing
voices from the past
telling her she's inadequate
as visions of abuse
filter through her senses
like an electric shock
before her scissors dig
into releasing tainted blood
from her hollow body
rejoicing in achieved freedom
upon drenching her white dove
fabric eagerly while she
floats into heaven to be
free among angels.

Author's Notes/Comments:

This poem was written about the many women struggling with abuse issues from growing up in a tainted world and how it leads them into self-mutilation where most people would feel pain, but they feel release because there is no other outlet for them and they embrace death to be away from the internal destruction killing them daily.I have to defend the people who chose to take their own lives. Sometimes, being alive for people is worse than being dead because of the inner turmoil eating them alive, abuse inflicted upon their bodies, and they torn apart souls. I'm sure if women and men felt there was another way to survive from their depression/anxiety they would take it, but to them this is their reality and it's their only way to be free from abuse.
