Single Tear Drop - (a cento)

Folder:
2009 Poetry

I'd already laid my heart face down,

trying to balance light and dark.

Emotions displayed openly and indiscriminately,

eyes closed and lost in a waking nightmare.

A muted prayer upon my tongue

held in a speck of dust in an omniscient moment.

I wonder if you even gave me a second thought

for we each know the truth.

But slumber finds a lonely heart

with the stain of a single tear drop.

Author's Notes/Comments:

Cento

From the Latin word for "patchwork," the cento is a poetic form made up of lines from poems by other poets. Though poets often borrow lines from other writers and mix them in with their own, a true cento is composed entirely of lines from other sources. Early examples can be found in the work of Homer and Virgil.
