Life's Accomplishment?

Folder:
2003 Poetry

You work all your life and what do you get?

A gold watch, a pat on the back, for what?

For giving your life to the American dream?

Mom, apple pie, and a chicken in every pot!

We all work hard to fulfill our dreams,

Or the dreams we are lead to believe in.

They teach us to want and desire certain things.

Then we strive all our life to achieve these.

Some of us are fortunate and succeed.

We grab the brass ring of life and feel complete.

As though we were suppose to do that.

Believing we accomplished our task.

Is that what it is all about, or are we fooled?

Fooled with false desires and hopes.

Shouldn't we look into our hearts and souls,

Then strive for what direction these lead?

Life accomplishment for one, is failure for another.

Sure, money in the bank and a loving family are great,

But at what cost is too much for all this?

Were you true to yourself, or follow the herd?

What can I say about this?  I guess it says it all.
