My father’s quarters collection

I remember the day when my father brought a giant navy-blue book. I was 12 years old and he was arriving from a job traveling. We were waiting for his arrival at the airport. Once in the house, he took it out and my face was of surprise and curiosity about that thing. He was excited because of that piece of cardboard. He put it on the table and took out a lot of coins from the USA. He was like a little boy in a candy shop, choosing candies of different colors, flavors and shapes. I couldn’t understand the reason he was acting like that, until I went to the table and saw what that big rectangle was about. It was the most elegant front I have ever seen. A navy blue cover with a silver shining frame in the corners. In the inside there was no pages, it was only the United States of America, showing all of its states with wonderful colors: An ocean blue, a vivid purple, a lustrous orange, a bloody red, a grass green and a showy yellow background. Every state had a perfect circle inside, a circle of the size of my eye, waiting for something to fit. In those little spots my father was placing quarters from all the states: Texas, Iowa, Idaho, New York, Arizona and many others. They look like silver shiny medals in a coronel suit. Wedding rings without empty space. My father was putting them and it seemed like he was playing chess, thinking his next movement while he was executing one in that moment. I was happy to see him like that, maybe he was remembering his childhood when he used to pick up rocks and he classified them by similar shape, maybe by color or even the size, who knows? At the end, he was a little disappointed because there was missing eight quarters from eight countries. Alaska and Hawaii were included in the list. He recovered his self with a warming cup of coffee made by my mother, who accompanied my father all the time, and was celebrating with my father this little time of mysterious joy. My father is still looking for those missing coins. That lost treasure that is waiting for being discovered by someone who give it the true value that it deserves. I will be glad to see my father again, with that happiness and energy from those days, when he finally founds the quarters which are lost over United States of America.
