The Cost of Freedom

To you it is just a war so many miles away

But you are not the one holding a gun today

To you it may seem we have no purpose there

But the loss of a loved one you do not have to bear

To you what is just a name on a wall

Is to another a face, a personality, and all

Fifty thousand names on a polished black stone

Every one a death we do not condone

Fifty thousand names on a seemingly endless wall

Every single one an American hero who stood proud and tall

To you it may seem to be Vietnam again

Thinking our government looks for a fight every now and then

But remember every day you are filled with glee

How great the cost of being free

How quick we all forget those whose blood was shed

And erase the memories of all the boys who now lie dead

It is our duty to rid the world of this terrible man

And all his weapons we must ban

We will witness the deaths of heroes we cannot ignore

Reminding us to never grow fond of war

But soon our boys can put down that gun

As it shall all be said and done

And soon the war shall cease

So we might enjoy the coming peace

But remember forever all the heroes gone

So that you may wake with freedom to the coming dawn

Author's Notes/Comments:

I'll never forget the men and women who gave their lives so that we may enjoy the freedoms we have, nor will I ever take for granted those freedoms which only their blood could consecrate.
