Love of a Dreamer

You’ll have to excuse my humility

I’m still trying to see how I can possibly be your everything

When I’ve never even been enough for myself

And I know I don’t have to be anything more than me

That’s all you’ve ever loved, all you’ve ever needed

But still I’ve felt the need to be so much more

You see, an angel deserves divine perfection

And I, well I’m as mortal as they come

Deep down to this tarnished core

So someday I’ll learn

Someday I’ll quit trying to be perfect, accept just being me

Just please bear with me, any alternative would be impossible

Because every day with you is like a dream come true

Living every moment, scared to death that someday I’ll finally wake up

From a dream that beat the rest

Author's Notes/Comments:

Charles Simic summed up poetry best when he said, “Poetry is an orphan of silence. The words never quite equal the experiences behind them.” It is this quote than inspired me to write my latest poem, Love of a Dreamer. Often people drive away the best thing to ever happen to them because they are scared of what might happen; scared to look at themselves in the mirror because one day their mate is bound to wake up and see them for the imperfect individual that they are instead of the object of perfection their mate perceives them to be. Everybody is the “perfect somebody” that someone else is looking for. The lucky ones have already found theirs. If you are lucky, then you’ve found yours. So remember, when someone loves you, they love you for all that you are, not for all that you aren’t, even if you can’t see it or comprehend it. Love like there’s no tomorrow, and don’t ever let go. Trust me on this one, because once upon a time, in a life that seems so distant and far from this one, I had that love. I let it go. Don't be like me. Live the life, don't write the poem.
