Evening Sky

Folder:
2010 Poems

There’s a light in the evening sky.

I can't help but look up and stare.

The white body floating overhead,

Radiating a quiet warmth down upon the snow.

Never to strong,

Never like the sun,

Never the day.

Only in the evening sky,

As the last rays dip behind the horizon,

Does she appear.

Here I am once more,

Looking up into the moonlight.

Silently wishing my dreams,

Silently drying my tears,

Silently hoping this New Year is different.

I deserve a change,

But don't know if I'll allow myself to try.

Here I am wishing upon the moon,

Because the sun never listened to my pleas.

There across the snowy ground,

Stands the eyes of a man,

Body fades into the past,

Yet his eyes stare me down.

The moonlight plays upon his dark brown eyes,

And I can't shake the fear he is two steps behind,

Forever following me,

Forever watching me.

Why must he haunt my dreams?

Why must he be held up in my mind’s eye?

Here I stand,

Alone on the soft snowy floor.

Here I stand,

Looking up to the light in the evening sky.

Pain fades away,

Fear drips away,

And I'm awake once more.

No longer in a drunken stupor,

Alert,

Watching the trees around me.

The naked branches playing in the wind.

Watching my clouds circle the light,

Dimming my hope,

Chances are slim,

But he always shows.

I turn to run,

But I’m frozen to the red snow.

Shot once more,

By the gun I threw aside.

I try to stand,

But slowly fall to a knee.

The snow grows darker,

And the moon slips behind the grey clouds.

Plunged into the eerie darkness,

Life slowly flowing away.

Wish the light would appear,

But my hope is gone.

Snow falls onto the ground,

Turning the red, white once more.

And slowly I'm buried,

Hidden beneath the clean white layers.

Lost to another winter.
