Ant Colony

The ants were in line to clocking out of work. It had been a complicated day the boilers had cooling problems, the rain flooded the emergency gates and the queen was in a particularly bad mood. For many of them it was not a first choice job but given the recent economy the positions at the nuclear plant were considered well-paying jobs. Every time it got harder and harder for insects to find a job. Even more so it seemed that even though colonies grew things never got more efficient. Bees, ants, cockroaches, butterflies, termites seemed to understand less of each other as time passed and hatred towards other species and their causes grew. What once were peaceful encounters began to be replaced by the carbon copied mind set of the twenty first century. As their desires for development at expense of others grew it seemed even harder to meet their actual needs. Thoughts like that passed frequently through ant #986452572145215862124 , who now found himself just two positions to the exit. The exit had a decontamination chamber to ensure no radiation was carried outside the plant.  As he entered the chamber the emergency alarm startled the earth, panicked the plant, and frightened the colony. As protocol stated every non-essential ant was to evacuate the building. Ant #9864524 had to go to his station to see exactly what the problem was. Once he got there the sight of the events devastated him. At that time, it was evident that nothing could be done. His team had been working on the technological applications of the energy sources that their plant exploited. Recent investments had led them to develop a highly unstable weapon. That day the queen was receiving a visit from other colony leaders and it seemed that in a moment of discussion she had set of the weapon trying to prove just how powerful her colony was. He knew his invention had the power to cause serious damage to the world, he couldn’t swallow the irony of the world being destroyed by an accident ! Protocols were put into place and some in the world were lucky to have taken measures against a threat this big. Quite some time had gone by and he was now ant #61. Re population due to the radiation was hard. What seemed like and awful world situation before could not possibly be compared to what life was currently like. The remaining ants were now in line but this time with other insects each day they all had to bring back food to the refugee camps. Lost in thought he saw a small bee ask his mom what roses were like and the ant shed a tear he too missed the roses he wondered if things could have gone out differently.
