The bird that took the sun

All birds gathered together in the sky every morning they talked about their lives, and competed to find out which of them could fly higher. They believed that if a bird could fly high enough to reach the sun he or she would become the leader.

The day started and so the daily competence, first went the hummingbird, he could move fast but he was so light that the wind blew him away. Then came the mighty eagle, she believed she was above all and used her fierce flight to maneuver through the skies but her feathers started burning and she headed back. Finally, the sparrow soared in the sky attempting to reach the sun but to no avail. There was one special bird that was never included to the gatherings and was always mocked because of her size and clumsiness: the ostrich. She always tried to fly but couldn’t get one feet above the ground.

One day, after being tired of being pushed around and not being taken seriously the ostrich got an idea. She couldn't fly, but she believed she could reach the sun while it was still on the ground. She started her journey just as the moon came out so she could reach what she always longed. She couldn't fly like the other birds, but she was able to run as fast as the wind. She ran and ran only having in mind his objective, it was almost sunrise and the clock was moving fast, with one last effort she got to the top of the mountain, lunged for the sun and caught it with its long beak, it was heavier than she expected, but she got strength from deep inside. She couldn't believe that the sun was there; the thing she always dreamed of was between her wings.

She played with the sun and bathed in its heat, it was the most beautiful thing she have ever saw, she couldn’t get tired of watching it shine. She didn't want to share it with the other birds that had always treated her so badly.

Finally, she decided to go back, but first she dug a deep hole and hid the sun so she could have it only to herself. When she ran over the mountains, she noticed something strange, there was no sign of all the life that ones have been there, the whole land was frozen. She was shocked and didn't understand at first, desperate she ran under the cloud hoping that all the birds were there, but instead of finding them singing up, they were all frozen in the ground, dying and groaning. She realized what she had done and raced back to get the sun, but as she ran she started losing strength, slowly ice was being formed in it’s feathers, breathing was difficult, she started losing control. It was getting colder and the sun just seemed like a small light in the distance. With one last effort she raced down the mountain to the place she had hidden the sun, she tried to dig it up, but the ground was frozen, she couldn’t control her wings, she dug until she fell to the ground, immobile she saw the snowflakes falling and the end of the beautiful paradise in which she once lived.
