The Cycle of Addiction

Folder:
Society

An addiction begins
as something minor.

You employ
a substance or activity
to cope from life’s pressures
and to relieve stress.

Then it starts to take up
more of your time,
occupy your thoughts.

Soon the thrill is gone
from the simple pleasures
and a small fix is not enough.

It no longer excites you
so your pursuits become riskier,
and you need the harder stuff
to maintain the high.

In the end, you are bound to it
though it started
as something so innocent.

Be careful that
your hobbies and habits
do not become addictions.
