CoverGirl (Rewrite)

I am a covergirl
applying these layers
of makeup
to make up
for my insecurities.

I hide behind
coats of concealer
and wear waterproof mascara
so they don’t see my tears.

I blush at my fears
and cower in the shadows
where lines are drawn
between superficiality and truth.

I know that this is
only a facade,
that self-acceptance
is found beyond cosmetics.

It comes from
beneath the skin,
deep inside the soul.

There I find the One
that gives me meaning,
my true foundation.

These false lashes
don’t compare
to the lashes
He endured for me.

My finely manicured nails
don’t measure up to
the nails that
punctured his wrists.

He doesn’t care about
my outer beauty;
He wants my heart.
