A Rose’s Thorns

Society A beautiful flower
at first sight;
but be warned
if you touch it,
it will prick you.
No matter how lovely
we may look,
we all have thorns
to keep others
from getting too close.
These thorns
began to sprout up
when people
tried to snip us
right at the stem.
We learned to
put up defenses
to keep away
these people
who intended harm.
But one day,
we will let someone in
near enough
to touch our petals
and know our beauty.
