My Progressive Friend

Other Stuff

There was a time I was young, full of ideas,

I needed someone to put wisdom in my head.

I knew there were all kinds of problems in the world,

I didn't believe what most people out there said.

Then I met someone who opened up my eyes.

And helped me to see through all of the lies.

And see that we weren't stuck in a dead end.

My progressive friend.

She knew about politics, religion, and more

and made more sense than anyone else I'd heard.

I agreed with so much of what she would say.

When she spoke I hung on every single word.

And there were a lot of good friends that she made

as she went on her environmental crusade.

She did more for us than she could possibly comprehend.

My progressive friend.

Your husband's so cool, a true music connoisseur,

his shed's like an incredible museum.

And no matter what you think you brought your kids up well.

They prove that to me each time that I see them.

Your daughter may have problems, but she's still wonderful.

Years ago we'd make love and it was so beautiful.

You're whole family's full of people I'd defend.

My progressive friend.

You're still working hard, you're an inspiration to everyone you know.

And you still put up a really good fight.

You still work for peace, for the truth, and for the poor,

and you're still the voice of everything that's right.

We're older now but there's still so much to do.

And I always feel so good when I think about you,

and the bad things in the world that you seemed to mend.

My progressive friend.
