Fable

Predator-Prey, Friend-Friend
by Mariana Ramirez Baralt and David Pumarejo Manzur

At the end of a long autumn, a majestic male bald eagle flies through the sky above North Alaska. It had been a marvelous hunting season because of tasteful species such as small foxes and rabbits. However, it is time for the bald eagle to travel South as due to the upcoming winter. The eagle soars the skies for days and nights. After a few weeks of traveling, he encounters himself with an empty belly. The mighty eagle decides to go hunting, with his keen sight he can even see the small roots of the trees deep below, cruising through the sky he sees a hare, right in the open, an easy prey. The eagle dives to catch the hare.

--Please stop!-- the hare screams, when the eagle is already dangerously close.

The eagle out of surprise of the scream manages to turn, leaving the hare unharmed.

--Why? Why you made me stop? That is very selfish of you. Hope you are aware that if it isn’t me it will the next predator to take your life, and I’m already starving.

-- That is selfish of you, to think your life is worthier than mine. Since I don’t intend in dying today and you intend in eating I have a proposition for you.-- said the hare.

-- I don’t see how you can make my situation better, you know giving the fact that I can eat you whenever I want. But I will listen out of amusement.

-- I will show you my way of eating in harmony with the nature, and if you feel full afterward you will let me live, otherwise you can eat me, since as you say, I’m a prey only waiting for a predator to eat me.

-- Ok. I will agree only because I’m ahead of my migration season.

-- First you will learn how to walk the earth, feel it moving, vibrating in your feet, you will feel everything, the herds running, the moles beneath, even the ants you will be able to feel.

-- I don’t see the point in that, I already know the earth I, unlike you, I have seen it’s size and details, I can even see, from up above the ants you mention.

The hare was patient with the eagle, she showed him what she meant, and the eagle without saying it out loud began to feel in love with the feeling. The eagle learned to dance to the beat of the earth. When the lesson from the hare finished, she gave him a couple of roots and berries and asked the eagle:

-- Now, tell me do you feel full filled in belly and spirit?

-- I was so wrong hare. Please forgive me. Yes, yes I’m whole now.

The hare smiled and began to fade. She faded whole and joined the northern light that danced in the sky.
