My Grandma's Witches

My grandma had a peculiar home. Situated on “Calle de la Amargura”, literally translated as “Biterness Street”, the façade of this house very accurately represented the name of the street. A black, old house, with old-fashioned curtains and a distinct cigar smell, you’d think her house is the typical grandma house. But if you really think that, you haven’t been to her guest bathroom. As a kid, peeing (or pooping, for that matter) in her house was never, ever an option. Even less if it was just a quick visit and I had to use the guest bathroom. That would mean that I had to pee with her witches. You see, my grandma, for some odd reason I still haven’t found an explanation for, liked to decorate her bathroom with witches. Witch dolls, of course. There were two witches hanging from the ceiling with their magic brooms, close to the mirror, and another two sitting on top of the toilet, always staring intensely into your eyes just as you were about to do your business. The rest of the bathroom was filled with “Halloween-like” decorations, and the color scheme of the bathroom was basically orange, purple, and black, giving it an eerie vibe. Either way, the witches were the highlight of that bathroom, and the most peculiar thing about these dolls was that whenever you clapped, they’d start laughing like maniacs, and their eyes would glow red. This eventually became funny, if I went into the bathroom with my Grandpa, Grandma, or simply someone older who I knew would take care of me in case the witches became real and wanted to eat me. But it wasn’t funny if I was by myself and the witches turned on. The thing is, that they wouldn’t only turn on with claps. The would turn on with loud noises in general, so you can imagine what happened every single time I flushed the toilet. I would always get ready to burst out running from the bathroom once the dolls started shaking and laughing, always with their demonic eyes. Why was my grandma very fond of this decoration for her guest bathroom? I have no clue. But looking back, it’ll always be the one room that made her house stand out from the rest, and to be honest, it did make my childhood a bit more interesting. At least, I have interesting bathroom stories to tell, and I’m pretty sure it’s not a common one.
