An Endless Struggle

Life seems like an endless struggle to stay above water.
To distinguish between what is true and real, from the false that is all around.
The truth seems to hide in the shadows, when the false shines through.
How can I find what's true in a world full of pain and fear?
Addiction calls my name every second of the day, daring me to come forth.
But I will not go, for I have seen the light overpower the darkness, and the hope shine through.

Author's Notes/Comments:

This poem is very personal and meaningful to me. I am now in recovery, but have struggled with addiction and have to deal with it everyday of my life. I try to make the best of my experiences, however painful, and turn them into something positive. I ended up returning to school to get my bachelor's degree in psychology. I now work as a psychiatric technician at a personal care home for people with severe mental illness. I hope to turn my love of writing into a career one day, that is my real dream.
