This elderly couple walked into the bookstore…
smiling at one another and holding hands
52 years after saying ‘I do’ and exchanging wedding bands.
Since they were strangers to me…
when it comes to their 52 years together
you’re probably wondering…how in the world I might know….
It’s simple…they were celebrating their anniversary…
and the old man told me so!
It could have been the excitement of their 52 years together
or the Margaritas they shared to celebrate…
but the story of their life together…that old man couldn’t wait to relate.
His wife smiled as she gently chastised him
“Robert,” she said, “the details of our life he doesn’t want to hear.”
Since the store was empty at the time I said, “Go ahead Robert…I’m all ears.”
So in an empty store on a Saturday night…I heard in all its glory….
with his wife, Linda, by his side
the condensed version of their life together…their personal love story.
When he finished…after allowing me full access
I could see they’ve lived a life filled with love, and joy and happiness.
Just before they left…Robert took me aside….
as Linda waited by the door…with her hands upon her hips.
“I knew the first time we kissed,” he whispered,
“I wanted her kiss to be the last kiss to ever touch my lips.”
As they exited the store…smiling…hand in hand
I couldn’t help but feel a thrill…
because I’ve never heard a better definition of love…
and I doubt I ever will
*A note to Boe, the store owner,
If you’re reading this…do not fret at how much time their story took…
because before they left the store…they also bought a book!
