ALMOST SANTA

Being an old man with a white beard and a smile…

sometimes children will pause…

(I’ve learned to recognize that twinkle in their eyes)

The moment, for a moment, they think I’m Santa Claus.

The other day in the bookstore a lady ran in

then smiled and asked me sheepishly

“Would you mind doing a favor for my daughter, Mackenzie, and me?”.

Before I had the chance to wonder as to what exactly would be my fate…

She said she was taking Mackenzie out for a birthday dinner

and they were running late.

She said, “When Mackenzie, saw me through the window…she paused…

then asked if she could go inside and visit Santa Claus”.

"I told her we were running late…that there was someplace we had to be!”

So she asked, if I’d ask Santa if he would stop and wave to me.

So away to the window I flew like a flash…(remembering this from my childhood)

and waved to Mackenzie from the window…the way I thought Santa would.

Next, I opened the door and smiled at this little girl…who in Santa Claus still believed

and said…Happy Birthday, Mackenzie…and I’ll see you on Christmas Eve.

I’ve had a lot of wonderful memories at the bookstore…

but nothing will ever replace…

after a quick little visit with a man she thought was Santa…

that smile on Mackenzie’s face.
