December 26th

How you've stood proudly before us for weeks upon weeks,
Tempting our thoughts with childish dreams the brave among us still seek.
Bulbs shining and bright, strings of garland perfectly strung,
Symbols of happier times, now only shared by our young.
We've watered you and cared for you and kept you our own,
We've sang and danced and drank before you, while you've looked graciously on.
Silently you stood as we filled your arms with neatly wrapped things;
Of anticipation, of expectation, of promises, all irregardless of our means.
Then we stole from you and ravaged you and took back what we gave;
We believed our own boxed lies, our selfish good will and got drunk on memories falsely made.
Now I lie as empty as you, beaten and pleased, as my thoughts turn to how we must be the same.
I rifle away your bulbs, strip you down and toss you out, and quickly forget from where you came.
