What I Can Tolerate

Folder:
Early 20s

Feeling everything
All at once
Each smile
Every pleasure
All the happiness there is
It all washes over me
Almost too much to tolerate

But this breadth of positive feelings
Doesn’t come alone
Attached is all the negative energy too
Just as easily felt

Feeling everything
All at once
Each hurt
Every fear
All the heartache there is
It all washes over me
Almost too much to tolerate

Having been so overwhelmed
I turned it off
Emotion, feeling; I turned myself numb
So I could get by

But the numbness has been lifted
And now I experience it all again

Feeling everything
All at once
Each smile and hurt
Every pleasure and fear
All the happiness and heartache there is
It all washes over me
Hoping to tolerate it this time

Because numbness
It was unbearable
