My Zeide´s Spinning Globe

My Zeide´s Spinning Globe

My zeide, which means grandpa in yidish (ancient jewish language, used in Europe before and during World War 2), has a beautiful spinning globe in his living room. This spinning ball has been there always, or at least for a long time, I don’t remember one day going to my Zeide´s house and not seeing the spinning globe. You´re a kid and what do you do with a spinning ball? You spin it, you spin it all the time and you fantisize about where do you want to go; that’s the game, my cousins and I used to play all the time, but just for a bit, because is not that fun. A spinnig globe, why my Zeide has a spinning globe in his living room? He has moved sofas, TV’s, surround systems, decoration, but not this spinning globe, its always there and it always will, but why? The spinning globe was made out of beautiful stones, each country is made out of a different color stone, you can see zaffire in Africa, Marble in Brazil, volcanic rock in Mexico, and the rest, I just don’t know, but they’re quite appealing. The spinning globe is surrounded by a golden structure that adds more value to this ornament; wait a second is it an ornament? Right now, I don’t think so. This spinning globe is more than a heavy piece of stone that spins around, it’s more than a game for young kids, its something else, definitely. Why from all the material things that the living room has ever had, the spinning globe is the only one that survived, this item is not longer an item, it is a survivor. A survivor and memoir of a thrilling life. My Zeide doesn’t talk much about about the spinning globe, he only enjoys watching his grandkids playing with the globe, feeling proud of us playing with the globe, just as if we were playing with him. But we are playing with him when we spin the globe, my Zeide is also a survivor and the globe is his trophy, his medal of honor for all the things he had to live, and suffer. Only soldiers received medals during the war, but what about the survivors? What about the people who had to suffer and said nothing? But this people, didn’t ask for anything, they didn’t want recognition, they just wanted a spinning globe to play with their families and remember the meaning of life and regain some faith.
