Nocturnes: Two Favorite Movies From The Sixties---A "Fanfic"

You crashed the wedding, and the blushing bride
you led away, to take a backseat ride
upon a bus, and to a life together
founded on honest love and youthful hope.
But common sense reminds you of this----whether
the day is dawning or the night is done,
her mother is still Mrs. Robinson
(implied turmoil is always on the brink).
This was too much:  your will just could not cope
with it.  You quit, and fled.  Friends found a place
for you---a frontseat ride through outer space,
to some far planet---surface compromised
by ancient bombfall.  It is earth, disguised!,
and now a place where monkeys really stink.

Author's Notes/Comments:

During the first term of my freshman year at college, I had audio recordings (VHS or DVD technology was not yet in reach) of my two favorite movies from the sixties, The Graduate and Planet of the Apes.  They had been broadcast, each for the first time, on CBS the week prior to my departure to college, on September 1st and September 3rd, 1976, respectively.  On Sundays, when the nostalgia for home hit the hardest, I would listen to these audio tapes.  My roommate thought this was stupid, being totally unaware that radio (that is, audio) entertainments had preceded television.  The idea, of joining the two films into one story, occured to me during September 1976.  This sonnet has only been delayed by forty-one years and five months.
