At Second Thoughts

"There were together Simon Peter, and Thomas called Didymus, and Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, and the sons of Zebedee, and two other of his disciples.  Simon Peter saith unto them, I go a fishing."
---John 21:2-3

Thomas, my doubt is not that he could rise;
he did:  but that we cannot meet his eyes,
nor speak to Him, as once we had, again.
Upon that cross, He bore our every sin;
and, thus, He knows, wholly, what we have been
and all the wickedness that we have done.
He shouted, "It is finished," as He died,
but for His finished effort---what a prize:
us?---fallible and never satisfied?
We are not worthy of Him:  no, not one.
If I could be transformed . . . well, that is wishing,
a futile hope.  Now, Simon, I can see
why you want to go back to Galilee
to seek peace in soul-numbing tasks---like fishing.
