+ 5TH POEMS: To My College Roommate, A Remembrance Of Sept. 12, 1976

[after the style of J. V. Cunningham]

This fact, on that day, you made clear to me:

you neither liked, nor sought, my company;

nor would we, any more, take meals together.

We were made roommates by mere circumstance.

Acquaintance, such as that, need not advance

into friendship---nothing in common, whether

or not we take the same course the next morning

(again that is only an act of chance).

One course in common, then; difference in social class

caused, I think, your far too candid scorning,

and did not cause the idle time too easily pass.

Avoiding you, I sought the library's quieter courtesy.

Author's Notes/Comments:

During the three and a half days of freshman orientation, I suspected the college would not allow me to fit in very well.  This incident, on the evening prior to classes beginning, confirmed that.  The sudden, smug dismissal did not cause me to fall apart, as it would have prior to July 10th, 1976:  because the gift I had received through BlueShift's assistance held me together on that day and through that term, and each subsequent, term; and nothing any collegiate pug-putz could do could intrude upon my soul.
