Saint Joseph, The Young Stepfather

[after Matthew, chapters 1 and 2]

I think Joseph was relatively young,
like Mary, and that she was his first love.
Therefore, he put her welfare far above
all else.  And unlike Zechariah, he
did not question the Lord's plan skeptically,
but followed all instructions with his tongue
held, faithfully, silent.  Not long a man,
and, therefore, lacking a maturer span
of wisdom and worldly experience,
he offered his heart's whole obedience:
not older fools' alternative objections
(like deep concern with "What will neighbors think?
or, "Gossip lasts as long as monkeys stink")
to any of the Lord's revealed directions.
