MISUNDERSTANDING

OneNight in Bangkok

When I came to Bangkok-Thailand for the first time (may be 1994), I wasn't so acquainted with the slangs I receive now and then in the streets. Hence, my responses, in football terminology, were all off side.

One night, I was walking in Sukhumvit street and had to stop by an ATM machine for some cash when a girl standing in a nearby corner gazed at me and hit her left hand by the right 3 times while hitting me with the question: boom .. boom?

It seemed to me that I understood the question, so I said: no I don't play the drums but I play with words sometimes. I don't know why she laughed at me although my answer was honest and straightforward, but since I was, as usual, running out of time, I didn't bother to ask why. I just went my way.

It took me , probably, the same time I needed to get my master's degree in order to discover that "Boom … Boom" as used in Thailand is a figure of speech alluding to sexual intercourse, as sometime they say in English "Hanky Panky"!

But before I make this discovery, it happened that I was sitting in a bar in Nana area in Bangkok, drinking beer and watching a rock-n-roll clip in my lap top when a sweet waitress came to ask me: what are you watching. Innocently, I said: Boom … Boom clip, would you like to sit and watch it with me? For no good clear reason, she gave me an angry look and hurried away. She misunderstood!

After I got my fill, I went looking for a taxi to take me back to my Hotel. I stood near a bus stop. To my right, there was a sexy teen girl with an invoking body licking a cone of ice-cream.

Suddenly, a drunk tourist, in his 30ties I guess, came. He approached the attractive teen and politely appealed,

He: excuse me miss

She: what?

He: I would like to ask you something but I wish that you don't misunderstand

She: ask

He:  but please don't misunderstand

She: ask

He: would be please let me lick?

She, handing him the ice-cream cone: O. K., lick

He: you see, you misunderstood

He then laughed and took a hike
