We grew together

We grew like trees together, didn’t take them long to reach the sky.

But as they grew up taller, their cores began to die.

What used to be so young and bright, slowly faded dark.

It’s hard to know you've started to die, when it is hidden beneath the bark.

Four times again the seasons change, like they have done for all these years.

The rut of leafs changing colors again, as soon as winter nears.

And then in spring the buds will grow, just like they have always done.

It’s just that this time what doesn’t show, is that part of us never felt the sun.

What used to hold us strongly together, has nearly all rotted away.

Now when the winds blow and we try to bend, we can’t just sit and sway.

As storms come and go and time passes by, it doesn’t take long to see.

That a strong enough wind that doesn’t break you, just might break me.

As more years pass by and storms come and go, we fall piece by piece to the ground.

Some bigger than others taking more of our life, but each with a terrible sound.

That haunting creak, echoing throughout the woods, letting all others know of the loss.

By now the bark that used to hide our death, is covered up with moss.

Still standing together, after all these years, a storm rages in the distant sky.

Today weaker than ever, but still with you, not knowing I am about to die.

The storm blows in fast, everything is quiet and suddenly daylight turns to dark.

Soon the winds will show, that no matter how tall or old, your only as strong as what’s beneath the bark.
