Mr. Nobody

Have you ever realized that life is all about decisions; a certain choice can change your journey for good or bad. Some say it’s all about intelligence and for someone like me, life should be pretty easy. It was easy at first. I graduated from college first of my class as a counter. My dad is a counter; he realized I was good with numbers so I didn’t want to disappoint him. College? Check. I’ve never been very social, that’s something I didn’t mind, but my mom did. Friends? Enough for her to be happy, so Check. My mom was worried I didn’t have a girlfriend therefore throughout my college years she made me go through enough awkward and embarrassing dates. Girlfriend? Pending.

So it all began without me even noticing it. A girl named Moly came into my life. My parents invited some friends to come over for lunch; they were visiting town and trying to set me up with this girl. Dinner was fine and I had the chance to exchange a few words with this girl. Moly was not the best looking person, but her energetic personality and interest in me made things easier for everyone. That same week, we decided to go to the movies before she and her family return home.

We saw each other once every now and then and chatted the rest of the time we couldn’t see each other. I was not convinced of knowing the person I was dating, sometimes she seemed a little over controlling or somehow… psycho. But I trusted my parents. On our fifth date I took her to dinner. She was very excited and that pleased me. I cannot say I was in love, because that was an unknown feeling for me. She kept saying how happy she was and that it was time to meet her family. Moly constantly did the whole talking; at the end of our date she invited me to a wedding. She said her cousin was getting married and that it was very important for her to introduce me to her family. I just nodded and kissed her goodnight without getting into details.

The next day she insisted to go shopping to look for a nice looking suite and a perfect tie, she was really excited about this wedding, and in a way I was too.

The day of the wedding I went to pick her up, I walked to the door and knocked, a minute later the neighbor who was also going to the wedding, I’m guessing because of his black suite on a Saturday at 6:00 pm, told me that there was nobody home, perhaps they were already at the wedding.

I received a text message from her telling me that she was waiting for me at the church, so I went, and when I entered to the church I saw all of this people on their sits waiting for the wedding to begin. The priest asks the bride where was his groom to be, i just couldn’t believe what I was hearing, it was Moly’s voice, then she turned around looked at me and said would you marry me?

All my life passed in front of my eyes, everyone looked at me, my hands start to sweat, my heart was racing, I didn’t know what to do, so I said yes, but an empty yes, even though I was not sure if I wanted to, but who knows? Maybe I have never known what I really wanted.

So this is the story of a man that never chose for himself. Today, the day of my wedding, I realized that destiny was just a bunch of yes and no’s; and in my case none of those were mine. Wife? Check.
